  • Key identification features : Medium sized trees, 9–15 m tall, bole 60–90 cm across; bark grey to pale brown or yellowish, smooth, thin, peeling off in large plate-like flakes, becoming rough and cracked with age. Branches not whorled. Leaves stiff, deep green, 5–10 cm long, occurring singly, pendulous, rounded back, with a deciduous sheath; foliage persistent 3–4 years. Male catkins small; cones ovoid-oblong, glaucous at maturity; cone scales broad with stout, recurved, obtusely triangular beak; seeds irregularly cylindrical, edible; wing short, caducous.
