The objective of ‘India Trees and Vegetation Types’ is to bring authentic data about diverse trees in the country on a digital platform. The endeavour is to achieve this goal with the participation and interaction of users.

India Trees and Vegetation Types is developed and maintained by the Research Team at the Herbarium JCB, Centre for Ecological Sciences (CES), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. The portal is designed to help students of biology, ecology, environmental sciences, conservationists, botanists, policy makers and general public.

How to use this site

The portal presents information on flowering and non-flowering trees and palms in India.
The home page introduces to the vegetation types in the country and gives a brief account of their trees and palms. Information about members of the Research Team can be accessed from the respective tabs provided in the Home page.
Profile of individual species can be browsed from the alphabetically-sorted lists of botanical names under 'Species' in the drop-down menu 'Index A-Z'. The various taxa are also sorted in their respective plant groups, namely, Flowering trees, Palms, Gymnosperm trees.
Families are also similarly listed alphabetically on the lines of arrangement in APG IV System of classification.

How the search is carried out

The portal provides general 'Search' and 'Advanced Search' capabilities.
General 'Search' engine is provided at the top that enables browsing species page by entering the name.
'Advanced search' option is also provided that enables filtered search using the various search criteria as displayed on the 'Advanced search' page.
A combination search further enables narrowed search results. (e.g., List of species of a 'Genus' in the region as also in a given district via a combination search)

Image Gallery

Images of species and vegetation types are displayed in the 'Gallery'. The 'Gallery' allows species to be identified by browsing images. Each image is hyperlinked to the corresponding species page or the vegetation type.
