  • Comments / notes : Common in forests, often in loamy soils derived from decomposed granite; found in subalpine shrub-lichen tundra at elevations around 1450 m
  • Key identification features : Tree about 5 m tall, bearing both young male and female cones; Buds sharply acute, 5–5.5 mm long, 2 mm wide, bud scales acute-ovate with darkened margins, apex acuminate; Leaves shorter, rigid, 11 mm × 1.2 mm, sharply pointed with an acuminate spine at apex, a distinct ridge on the abaxial surface, and paired resin canals; Female cone scales relatively soft, notched at the apex.
