  • Key identification features : Medium to large deciduous trees, 12–20 m tall; secondary branches pendulous; heartwood red; leaves pale to bright green, slender, ~2.5 cm long, single on elongated shoots and seedlings, in dense fascicles on short arrested branchlets; needles on long shoots grey-green, short shoots bright green; young cones reddish brown; cones cylindrical, 5–7.5 cm, erect (reversed) on pendulous branchlets; scales persistent, supporting scales longer than ovuliferous scales, tips reflexed, cuspidate. Fruit dark purple.
