  • Key identification features : Small tree, 15-20 ft tall, with few thorns, about 8mm long, young shoots hairy; Leaves 1-3 inches long, nearly as wide as long, base broadly cuneate to nearly straight at the base, lobed, leaves on sterile shoots broadly ovate, with basal pair of lobes often cut deeply, flowering shoots narrower, rhomboid to obovate, with more tapered base, upper surface dark green, slightly hairy, lower surface paler, more densely hairy, becomes almost glabrous at maturity, petiole 0.5-1 inch long, stipules large, deeply toothed; Inflorescence corymbs, 2-3 inches across; Flowers white, about 1.6 cm in diameter, calyx and flower stalks covered with grey tomentum, stamens 20, with red anthers, styles 4-5; Fruit blackish-purple, oval, about 0.5 inch long.
