  • Key identification features : Leaves very large, more than 2 feet in diameter, divided almost to the base into 7 digitate parts, surface glabrous, when dry, brownish-green, somewhat glossy, texture chartaceous, 7 segments arranged in digitate manner, lowest lobes smaller, 3 middle lobes nearly equal in size, lobes divergent with intervening spaces, lobes cuneate-oblong, base greatly narrowed, apex sharp, somewhat acuminate, uppermost lobe ovate-oblong, except for the narrowed base and apex, lobes are pinnately divided, lowest lobes also divided in a similar pinnatifid manner, leaf margin pinnately lobed, spinulose-serrulate, teeth end in thickened, almost spiny tips, entire in upper portion of the lobes; Petiole nearly 1 foot long, cylindrical except for a somewhat flattened front surface, enlarged at base, base with ridges on the posterior side, these ridges fall away leaving scars, densely covered with scattered, somewhat fascicled soft spines, otherwise covered with spreading spines, when dry, brownish, slightly striated.
