- Key identification features : Deciduous, erect tree, up to 12m tall, trunk 30-50cm diameter; Bark greyish, wrinkled, crown broad, dense, horizontal or drooping branches; Trunk stout with greyish, wrinkled bark, branches horizontal or pendulous; Leaves alternate, compound, trifoliate, petiole 3-7cm long; Leaflets 3 per leaf, elliptic-lanceolate to oblong-elliptic, 8–20 cm long, 3–7 cm broad, apex long-acuminate, margin entire, texture coriaceous, upper surface glossy, dark green, glabrous, lower surface pale green, dull, pubescent; Inflorescence racemose, axillary or terminal, drooping, 8-40cm long; Flowers papilionaceous, about 5cm long, 3cm broad, lilac, standard petal marked with purple longitudinal lines, fragrant; Corolla papilionaceous, standard- lilac with purple longitudinal streaks, wings and keel- lilac; Fruit legume, brown, woody, flattened, 12-30cm long, 2-3cm broad, dehiscent at maturity by explosive splitting; Seeds 5-10 per pod, lenticular, black, 1-1.6cm diameter, 1-2mm thick.
