- Key identification features : Large shrub or small tree, young branches pubescent, later glabrous to subglabrous; Leaves 5–13 × 1.7–5.1 cm, lanceolate, elliptic, or ovate-lanceolate, margin serrate with gland-tipped teeth, upper surface hairy on midrib when mature, lower surface glabrous, petiole 7-16mm long, pubescent, stipules up to 1.3cm long, semicordate, margin serrate; Male catkins: 2.5-4cm long, nearly sessile, few small leaves at base, rachis villous, bracts linear-oblanceolate, silky on both sides, sometimes glabrate on the back, dark brown; Male flowers: stamens 2, filaments free, usually glabrous, gland solitary, erect, opposite the bract; Female catkin: 5-11cm long, borne on very short leafy shoot, rachis villous, bracts about 2mm long; Female flowers disk half surrounding the base of the ovary, ovary glabrous, stipe about 0.5 mm long, style filiform, stigma diverging, entire or bifid; Fruiting catkin 10-18cm long, fruit capsule glabrous, 6-7mm long, stipe about 1mm long.
