  • Key identification features : Tall shrub or small tree, 2.5-10m high, persistently grey tomentose, wood striate; Stipules reniform or semicordate, 1.5-6mm, caducous; Leaves obovate to elliptic-lanceolate, 5–15 × 3–6 cm, apex acute to obtuse, margin sinuate-erose, glandular dentate, lower surface grey, adpressed-hairy, upper surface glabrescent to puberulous, petiole 4-12mm long; Inflorescence catkin, numerous, closely spaced, densely villous, precocious; Male catkin: subsessile, ovoid to subcylindrical, covered with long, white hairs, bracts 2-3.5mm, hairs 1.5-3mm long, exceeding the bracts, stamens 2, distinct, glabrous, filaments 7-10mm long, anthers 0.7-1mm long; Female catkin: 4–6 × 1–1.5 cm, borne on long leafy-bracted stalk, bracts similar to one in male catkins, gland 1, entire, ovary tomentose; Fruit capsule, 7-9mm, pedicel about 2mm, long.
