- Key identification features : Medium to large tree, 20-30m high, up to 100 cm diameter; Trunk short, massive, forms a broad, irregular, open crown in open areas, trunk long, straight, crown small, rounded in forests; Bark greyish-green, smooth when young, blackish, furrowed when mature; Leaves broadly deltoid, 8–15 cm long, nearly as broad, surface glabrous on both sides, apex short-acuminate, margin dentate, teeth incurved with glandular/callous tips, base truncate to subcordate, with 2-3 basal glands, petiole strongly flattened laterally; Bracts fringed, narrow divisions; Male catkin: 7.5-12.5cm, thick, stamens about 60 or more, anthers red; Female catkins: slender, green, ovary glabrous, stigma 3 or 4; Fruit 15-25cm long, stalk hairless, capsules ovoid, 6-10mm long, surface glabrous, green, splits into 3–4 parts when mature, peduncle 3-10mm long; Seeds cottony.
