  • Key identification features : Tree; Wood dull brown, very dense, durable; Young branches rounded, almost black-brown, finely dotted; Young shoots: leaves crowded at tips, covered with rust-colored down; Leaves oblong-lanceolate, 5-7 inches long, 1.5-1.75 inches wide, apex acuminate but not sharply pointed, base tapering, margin slightly wavy, serrated toward upper part, upper surface glossy, lower surface bluish-green, rust-colored hairs sometimes present along underside; Inflorescence peduncle covered with rust-colored hairs, usually shorter than petioles, arise in leaf axils, flowers in pairs, sometimes solitary; Female flowers: ovary tricarpellary; Fruit acorn, cupule hemispherical, scaly, sits directly on thickened fruit stalk, inner disk slightly raised, convex, nut: ovate to oblong, surface smooth, apex blunt, base depressed with small cavities.
