  • Key identification features : Shrub or tree, up to 7m high, dioecious or monoecious; Bark pale grey to greyish-white or brown, smooth; Branchlets pubescent when young, becomes nearly glabrous later, lenticels conspicuous, oblong; Leaves alternate, broadly ovate to sub-orbicular, occasionally lobed, 8–20 × 6–15 cm, thick, papery, base cordate to truncate, slightly oblique, margin shallow, coarse teeth or entire in lower half, apex acute to acuminate, petiole 2-5cm long; Male inflorescence: 1-2 per node, 3-6cm long, peduncle 1-1.5cm long; Male flowers: calyx lobes narrow-ovate, yellow-green, hairy on inner side, stamens small, pistillode present; Female inflorescence: 1 per node, 2-3cm long, peduncle 1-1.5cm long; Female flowers: calyx lobes obovate, hairy near tip, styles short, stigma 2-branched, hairy on outer side; Fruit syncarp, cylindrical, 2-3cm, white, red, or dark purple when mature.
