  • Key identification features : Deciduous tree, up to 40ft high, branches armed with spines, young shoots downy at first later becomes glabrous; Leaves alternate, ovate or oval to oblong-lanceolate, 1½–4 inches long, about half as wide, apex pointed, base mostly rounded, upper surface dark green, glabrous, lower surface paler, downy, petiole 0.5-1.5 inches long; Flowers unisexual; Male flowers: green, numerous, in short-stalked round clusters; Female flowers inconspicuous, solitary or less conspicuous clusters; Fruit globose, 2-4inches across, yellowish-green, surface pitted, with think rind.
