  • Key identification features : Medium-sized to fairly large tree, up to 30m tall, bole up to 125cm diameter, often branchless up to 20m, trunk sometimes shorter, crooked, with buttressed, crown spreading; Bark: outer bark smooth, shallowly fissured or flaky, pale grey to pale yellowish-brown, inner bark pale yellow to bright orange; Leaves opposite, compound, trifoliolate, leaflets glabrous on the lower surface; Inflorescence terminal, in upper leaf axils, paniculate, rather lax; Flowers bisexual, zygomorphic, calyx cup-shaped with 5 lobes, lobes sometimes absent or indistinct, corolla bluish with short tube, bilabiate, upper lip 2-lobed, lower lip larger, 3-lobed, pubescent externally; Stamens 4, inserted on the corolla tube, exserted, didynamous; Ovary superior, 2-4 chambered, style filiform with bifid stigma; Fruit drupe, subglobose, about 5mm in diameter, bluish-black when mature, often sessile on enlarged calyx; Seeds 1-4, obovoid or oblong.
