- Key identification features : Erect shrub or small tree, bracnhes long, drooping; Thorns 1-2 divergent in each leaf axil, 10–15 mm long, articulate at base, easily breakable; Stiplues 2 per leaf, minute, subulate; Leaves suborbicular, ovate, or elliptic, apex pointed or rounded, terminated by 1–2 mm thorn-like structure, upper surface shining, 2–6 cm × 1.5–6 cm, petiole 2-8mm long; Inflorescence racemes or panicles in leaf axils, terminal panicles up to 25cm long; Flowers yellowish green, polygamous; Male flowers: crowded, subsessile, calyx deeply divided, about 2mm long, petals slightly longer than calyx, green, often finely serrate in upper part, stamens filaments longer than corolla, anthers oblong; Female flowers: pedicel up to 8mm long, calyx, petals somewhat shorter than in male flowers, staminodes sterile, sagittate anthers, shorter than corolla, ovary imperfectly 4-loculed, stigma deeply bifid; Fruit berry, white, globose, 5-6mm diameter; Seeds 1-3 per fruit.
