  • Key identification features : Large deciduous tree, up to 30m high, crown broadly ovoid; Bark dull grey, becomes furrowed with age, branchlets yellowish, terete, glabrous; Leaves rhombic, rhombic-ovoid, or deltoid, 5–10 × 4–8 cm, texture thinly leathery, base cuneate or broadly cuneate, rarely truncate, margin crenate-serrate, ciliate, apex long acuminate, upper surface green, lower surface greenish, petiole about equal to or longer than the leaf blade, laterally flattened, glabrous; Male catkins 5-6cm long, rachis glabrous, bracts brownish, 3–4 mm, membranous, laciniate, male flowers: stamens 15-30, anthers purplish; Female flower: ovary ovoid, glabrous, stipitate, stigma 2; Fruit capsule, ovoid, 5–7 × 3–4 mm, 2-valved, stipitate, fruiting catkins 5-10cm.
