- Key identification features : Small tree, up to 12m high, branchlets pendulous, bole often crooked, branches thick, crown dense, shady; Bark smooth, grey, branches corky, sometimes purple, young branches often 4-sided; Leaves opposite, surface shiny, 13-18cm long, apex shortly pointed, base broad, narrowing to petiole, petiole about 1 cm long, hairs present in vein axils on lower surface, stipules leafy, at nodes of young shoots, large, rounded, about 1.5 cm across, 2 cm long, caducous; Flowers white, fragrant, occur 1-3 in leaf axils, about 2.5cm long; Fruit deeply lobed, about 2cm in diameter, black when ripe.
