  • Key identification features : Semi-deciduous to deciduous tree, up to 20 m tall, crown dense, rounded, stem tall, bare; Bark young branches grey-brown, smooth, older branches, trunk dark brown, rough, cracking into square plates, slash thin, fibrous, brown to dark red, branches often spiny; Leaves alternate, simple, texture subcoriaceous, upper surface deep glossy green, lower surface paler, minutely appressed-puberulous, leaf blade elliptic, oblong-elliptic, or obovate, 4.5–18 × 1.5–7 cm, apex subobtuse to acuminate, base rounded, margin entire or slightly wavy, stipules lanceolate-acuminate, 5–7 mm long, petiole 3-10mm long; Inflorescence axillary clusters; Male flowers: sepal yellow-green, triangular, 1.5-2mm long, petals obovate, shorter than sepals, stamens 5, pedicel 1-2mm long; Female flowers: subsessile, disc enveloping the ovary, styles 2, forked; Fruit drupe, black subglobose to ellipsoid, about 8 mm long, 5–8 mm in diameter, single-seeded.
