  • Key identification features : Large shrub or small tree, up to 15 feet tall, branches stout, red-brown, densely furnished with leaves; Leaves stiff, leathery, linear-elliptic, apex pointed, base tapered, narrow, 3-5 inches long, 3/8–1/2 inch wide; Inflorescence dense spikes, 4-6 inches long, 2½–3 inches wide; Sepals hairy on the back, stamens rich, brilliant crimson, about 1 inch long, anthers golden, stamens inserted on the rim of a cup-shaped receptacle, receptacle densely white-hairy on the outside; Fruit half-spherical, about 1/4 inch long, 1/4–7/16 inch wide.
