  • Key identification features : Small to medium-sized evergreen tree, up to 20m high, crown spread up to 9m, pyramidal when young, overall narrow form, becoming wider with age, foliage dense; Trunk tapering, bottle-shaped when young, buttressed, wider at the base in young trees, bottle shape often lost with age, trunk, stem green when young, becoming stout, grey with age; Leaves simple, often lanceolate, up to 10cm long, entire or 3-5 lobed, glossy green, young foliage pale green, tinged with pink; Flowers monoecious, small, bell-shaped, white or cream, inner tube streaked with pink, red, or purple; Fruit distinctive woody capsule, boat-shaped, 1-7cm long, brown initially, becoming blackish at maturity; Seeds numerous, round, relatively large, yellow, coated with fine irritant hairs.
