  • Key identification features : Medium to large-sized tree, dioecious, about 12-35m high, trunk diameter 30-150cm; Bark brown, finely fissured, scaly texture; Deciduous branchlets thin, soft, often drooping; Leaves reduced to scale-like teeth, less than 0.5mm long, arranged in whorls of 6-8 at joints, nodes spaced about 5 mm apart, leaves on main twigs up to 3 mm long, curved backward, rings closely set, about 1.5 mm apart; Flowers inconspicuous, light brown; Male flowers: in terminal spikes, about 0.4-4cm long, at tip of shoots, arranged in whorls with 11–13 whorls per cm of spike; Female flowers: small, reddish, oval-shaped, about 5mm long; Fruits samara, fruiting cones small, subglobose, size about 7–14 × 4–6 mm.
