  • Key identification features : Small tree, trunk diameter about 20cm, crown open, airy, branching sparse, with thick, stubby twigs; Bark sinuous, shallowly fissured, texture glossy, color grey, often tinged reddish or maroon; Leaves alternate, 25–30 cm long × ~15 cm wide, lobed, usually 5-lobed, rought, deciduous, turn reddish before shedding; Flowers terminal, borne on leafless branches, large, about 10cm across, bright glossy yellow; sepals 5, cupped, brownish, petals 5m large, showy, stamens numerous, forming a central cluster with yellow-tipped anthers; Fruits initially bulbous and brown, about 7cm, 5 stiff, translucent, plastic-like segments alternating with 5 opaque brown segments, interior filled with white cottony fibers; Seeds numerous, about 0.5cm, curled, texture hard, color brown.
