  • Key identification features : Clustered, non-climbing, short, subterranean or free-standing, up to 5 m tall, 5 cm in diameter; Leaf sheaths greenish-brown with brown hairs, densely covered with black, needle-like spines up to 2 cm long; Ocreas up to 40 cm long, spiny, fibrous, disintegrate early; Rachis up to 1.5m long, bears 28–49 lanceolate pinnae on each side, pinnae strongly clustered and spreading in different planes, veins on upper surface, margin bistly; Inflorescence about 1 m long, erect, non flagellate, inflorescence bracts splits open, become tattered; Fruits reddish-brown, ovoid or ellipsoid, up to 1.5*1 cm in size.
