  • Key identification features : Evergreen, large shrub to medium-sized tree; Mature stems with dark brown bark, young shoots exhibit star-shaped (stellate) hairs; Leaves simple, alternate, ovate-lanceolate, 10–13 cm long and 3.5–5 cm broad, 3-ribbed, almost hairless, margins toothed, taper at both ends, apex long-pointed; Petioles 6-8mm long; Stipules linear-lanceolate, 4–5 mm long; Inflorescence 2-3 flowered cymes, peduncle 1.5-1.8cm long, bracteate; Flowers bisexual, yellowish-white, 2.5cm across; Sepals oblong, 1.2–1.5 cm long, 3-nerved, densely velvety on the outside; Petals small, oblong-elliptic, 4–5 mm long, claw (basal part) is larger than limb(expanded tip), large gland covers the entire petal except the pointed tip; Stamens numerous, filaments 4-5mm long; Ovary bilobed, sometimes with more or fewer lobes, covered in hairs; Style longer than stamens, stigma divided into 1-4 laciniate lobes; Fruit berry, composed of two fused lobes, occasionally entire or 4-lobed, each lobe 6-8mm in diameter, surface smooth, turns black on maturity.
