  • Key identification features : Deciduous tree, typically 5–10 m tall, occasionally reaching up to 18 m; Stem swollen for water storage, mostly unbranched with short branches concentrated near the crown; Leaves alternate, compound, 2-3 times pinnate, pinnae opposite; Inflorescence panicles, in leaf axils; Flowers hermaphrodite, zygomorphic, white or red in color; Sepals 5, unequal, spreading or reflexed, the fifth (posticous – at the back) overlaps the others, sepal-tube short; Petals 5, upper 2 petals smaller, lateral petals ascending, anticous (front-facing) petal is the largest, disk present, lining the inside of the sepal-tube, with short, free margin; Fruit capsule, long, beaked, 3-6 angled, torulose, 1-celled, 3-valved.
