  • Key identification features : Fast-growing dioecious tropical tree about 40 m high. Bark greyish brown and fissured; wood light, durable. Leaves large 20-60 cm, leathery, ovate, entire with prominent veins; young leaves reddish-brown. Flowers large 5-7 cm, actinomorphic, solitary or in small clusters; calyx cup-shaped, petals brownish or pale yellow-green, foetid. Stamens numerous; ovary superior. Fruit large, 15–30 cm, up to 3 kg woody capsule with dark brown, oily pulp and large seeds, highly toxic (HCN) but edible after fermentation.
