  • Key identification features : Single, stout, and upright tree, reaching up to 7 meters in height; Branchlets end in 4-5 angled branchlets that are up to 1 meter long and 2 cm wide, slight constrictions at intervals of up to 20 cm, they may branch again, forming a dense, candelabra or mop-like crown; Spine shields continuous horny strip of united spine shields along each margin, widen at each pair of spines and taper towards the one above; Spines paired initially be red and then become grey, stout, rigid, and up to 8 mm long; Bark uniformly grey, smooth bark is slightly raised around the holes, older bark, these holes are no longer visible; Inflorescence cyathium; Flowers unisexual, surrounded by bracts and glands; Male flowers: single stamen, longitudinally dehiscent anther containing two thecae; Female flowers: single pistil, 3-locular superior ovary, three persistent styles; Fruit capsule, red with 3 distinct lobes when mature, woody.
